Buca di Beppo restaurants closing: List and map of doomed locations amid bankruptcy filing

Fast Company

Another restaurant chain has announced it is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and closing locations. This time it’s the Italian family restaurant brand Buca di Beppo. The Orlando-headquartered casual restaurant’s bankruptcy filing comes after Red Lobster filed for bankruptcy earlier this year.

Both chains’ reasons for doing so are similar. Both have cited downward economic and upward inflationary pressures on consumers who have thus reduced spending on dining out in order to save money.

But Buca di Beppo also cited the pandemic in its struggles. In court documents, Buca di Beppo said that it had “worked to right-size [operations] following the unpredictable and unprecedented scale of the COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly disrupted the Debtors’ restaurant operations and severely limited customer demand.”

Buca di Beppo: list of closing locations

In total, Buca di Beppo has reportedly closed 18 stores across 14 states, according to a count by CBS News. Twelve of those locations were closed at the end of July. Fast Company has reached out to Buca di Beppo to confirm the list and will update this post if we hear back.

Again, in its court filings, Buca di Beppo blamed the closures on the lasting effects of the pandemic, stating, “The Debtors’ projections demonstrated that to mitigate the longstanding effects of the pandemic and address outsized lease/rent costs, store closures were necessary.”

Here are the closed Buca di Beppo locations, according to CBS News. You can also reference the interactive map embedded above.

The future of Buca di Beppo

People often conflate “bankruptcy” with “going out of business,” especially when store closures are involved. But Chapter 11 bankruptcy is undertaken so a business can get its debts under control and continue operating, which is what Buca di Beppo plans to do.

After the restaurant closures, Buca di Beppo says it will still have 44 locations open for business and is in the process of opening another new location. You can find all of Buca di Beppo’s locations here.

As for announcing the bankruptcy and the shuttering of locations, William Snyder, chief restructuring 0fficer of Buca C, LLC, said, “We believe this path will best allow us to continue to serve Buca’s patrons and communities for many years to come. We are open for business in 44 locations, and we expect day-to-day operations to continue uninterrupted. We anticipate moving through this process as quickly and efficiently as possible to emerge as a stronger organization built for the future.”
